Karen and Jack Sumner, Portia and Josh Clark as well as Lori Curole and Amy Farwell were all in attendance for the Portland Symphony Orchestra's opening night last evening. Karen thought the conductor brought every ounce of passion out of the orchestra in Beethoveen's Eroica. Josh was impressed with the real dynamics with which the first piece was played.
Amy liked knowing the back story of the piece, for instance that it's Beethoveen's favorite piece and that it was orginally composed with Napoleon in mind. Later Beethoveen violently changed the title of the piece after Napoleon crowned himself emperor. After Napoleon died, Beethoveen said he already wrote a piece for this occasion (the second movement of Eroica).
